The term refers to the ball crushing the foot of the batsman, if not played with their bat. Sandshoe is not literal though: batsmen wear sturdy boots, not sandshoes, when batting.

Cricket jargon - a ball directed at the toes of the opposing batsman. This term was supposedly coined by fast bowler Jeff Thomson to describe his tactic against the tall English batsman Tony Greig.
